The Hermitage hill above the Rhône at Tain l'Hermitage has produced great wine since the Roman era. Its granite soils produce a Syrah unlike any other: deeply coloured, slowly evolving, building layers of pepper and olive and leather and smoke over years and decades. It is not a wine that performs. It is a wine that simply is — and its presence is enough. Young Hermitage can seem almost closed, almost austere. Then, with time, it opens into something profound and unhurried. Gathered Silence was the natural title: the Northern Rhône holds its silence like no other. She has nothing to prove. She simply is.

Every WiWwaW portrait begins not with a canvas or a lens but with a moodboard — a private, intuitive assembly of words, colours, textures and images that together form the wine's character translated into a woman. The moodboard for Gathered Silence travels with the finished work to its collector: a window into the creative process, a second layer of the work itself.

"He doesn't make artworks. He creates encounters."
