Barolo is called the king of Italian wines and the wine of kings, and the title is earned. Nebbiolo from the Langhe hills of Piedmont produces wines of immense structure and extraordinary longevity. The tannins in young Barolo can be almost aggressive. The wine demands patience — years, often decades — before it shows what it truly is: tar and roses, leather and dried violet, an austerity that becomes, with age, something breathtaking. The Langhe DOCG encompasses five communes: Barolo, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba and Verduno. Each has its own character — La Morra elegant and approachable, Serralunga austere and long-lived. All require waiting. The Weight of Time was built on this quality: she only opens for those who wait.

Every WiWwaW portrait begins not with a canvas or a lens but with a moodboard — a private, intuitive assembly of words, colours, textures and images that together form the wine's character translated into a woman. The moodboard for The Weight of Time travels with the finished work to its collector: a window into the creative process, a second layer of the work itself.

"He doesn't make artworks. He creates encounters."
